Bero, Mary - Still Lifes

Mary Bero, Still Lifes

Still Lifes, 2013

Wisconsin artist Mary Bero's decorative fiber works and miniature tapestries combine embroidery with painting and drawing to create an explosion of vibrant color, intimacy, and emotion. In Still Lifes, the checkerboard grid of images emerges from fears and dreams. Her technique includes hand-stitching cotton, silk thread, or floss to a cloth backing, simultaneously building up areas of color and texture that form striking images and patterns. She sometimes augments these methods with acrylics, cloth, or paper.

Her work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions over a span of thirty-plus years, and is found in collections around the U.S. as well as in Germany and the United Kingdom. Selected collections include: Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Milwaukee Art Museum, and Racine Art Museum.
