Each fall, the Racine Art Museum welcomes the newest gifts of artworks to its permanent collections with a debut exhibition. Receiving a substantial amount of contemporary ceramic sculpture, this exhibition featured figurative work, both abstract and realistic, and many dealt with the nude as subject matter. A few of these ceramic pieces are life-sized. Although the museum focused on major gifts of artists known internationally for their work in the ceramic medium, other materials were represented as well.
New and Novel 2009 also featured selections from a group of late-20th century photographs donated by Karen Johnson Boyd to support RAM's works on paper collection. These figurative photos are primarily portraits, capturing the images of well-known individuals such as James Dean, the Beatles, James Joyce and Elvis Presley.
