Amanda Cosgrove Paffrath and Joey's Yardarm

Fire and Water!
It takes all kinds of heat to make glass, and to make good, hot food. After all if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen (and the glass studio)! Amanda Cosgrove Paffrath is known for her devotion to the art of glass, as a glass blower and co-founder of Hot Shop Glass. The translucency of glass mimics that of water. On the water, in the water, by the water––Joey’s Yardarm takes its inspiration from Racine’s iconic waterways.

Tradition Meets Transformation
Transforming cold into hot, transforming old to new. Glass artist Amanda Cosgrove Paffrath had her first date with now husband/musician Mark Paffrath at the Yardarm. And when Amanda set to brainstorming, over a burger and beer, a new creative space in Racine that would eventually become Hot Shop Glass, she did so at the Yardarm. When the Yardarm transformed to Joey’s Yardarm, the tradition of having a place to meet for good conversation, great food, generous drinks, and lively music was kept alive. Joey’s Yardarm offers a new menu and a new twist on this old property, which are just as important as the tradition it represents.
Amanda took her first formal art class at RAM’s Wustum of Fine Arts at age 5, began creating beaded jewelry at age 8, and was introduced to glass blowing as a high school student of Dave Drewek at The Prairie School. Amanda took several semesters of glass sculpture in college while earning a practical degree in Sociology and Social Welfare from UW Madison in 1989. For 10 years, she worked as an advocate for battered women, all the while creating jewelry and blowing glass whenever she could.  In 1997, she took a chance on a dream and opened Funky Hannah’s Beads & Art in downtown Racine. Eight years later, another dream became reality when she collaborated with other glass artists to open a public access glass blowing facility and gallery, Hot Shop Glass. Amanda now runs two arty businesses, teaches jewelry making, glass bead making and glass blowing, and creates her own art when she can! Her work is in collections throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. Amanda has volunteered for many social justice causes and is a strong advocate for the revitalization of downtown Racine. She lives just north of downtown with her two kids and husband singer/songwriter Mark Paffrath.

Hot Shop Glass
The time was right in early 2005 when several local glass artists met to brainstorm the idea of creating a community-based glass blowing facility. Just a few weeks later they developed a plan and found the perfect spot: a dilapidated 1880’s former stable in downtown Racine. With a little vision, and a lot of hard work, dreams became reality. Beautifully restored, this jewel became home to Hot Shop Glass, a state of the art glass blowing studio and gallery.  More than a decade later, the studio is as active as ever under the direction of founder Amanda Cosgrove Paffrath and co-owner Daniel Sviland.

Joey’s Yardarm is a nautical restaurant and bar in downtown Racine near both Lake Michigan and the Root River. The restaurant provides customers with high-quality, made from scratch pub food featuring healthy options with a focus on fish and seafood.
