Toshiko Takaezu

The Toshiko Takaezu Ceramic Acquisitions Fund was established to purchase artwork for the collection, by other artists working in clay.

Toshiko Takaezu, a devoted friend of RAM, passed away in March 2011 at the age of 88. She was widely acknowledged as one of the world’s leading ceramic sculptors.

Takaezu was already represented in RAM’s collection when she offered us her largest sculptural installation, the Star Series. This gift debuted at RAM in a 2005 exhibition celebrating her aesthetic achievements and career. The 14 large-scale pieces that make up the Star Series create an environment one walks through, producing a unique aesthetic experience. Many RAM guests were spiritually moved by this exhibition and these beautiful works. She was so pleased with Racine’s response to her work that she presented two additional sculptural installations to the museum.
