Works on Paper from RAM's Collection: Prints Matter, Master Mimics

June 8 - August 11, 2018

Currently, works on paper––including several contemporary print portfolios––comprise a sizable portion of the nearly 10,000 pieces in RAM’s collection. In this context, a portfolio is understood as a collection of prints from individual artists that are organized around a theme. Print portfolios offer viewers the chance to see different creative minds addressing the same topic and allow collectors to expand their holdings with a variety of names.

This exhibition showcases RAM’s most recent portfolio acquisition, Prints Matter, Master Mimics. Contemporary printmaker William Greider organized this effort, which gathers together works inspired by art and cultural history. About it, Greider states: “Printmakers have a long history of reinventing and paying homage to images and artists of the past.” Featured artists include Janet Ballweg, Kristen Bartel, Sharon Childress, John Cizmar, Doug DeVinny, Oscar J. Gillespie, William Greider, Karla Hackenmiller, John S. Hancock, Neal Harrington, John Hitchcock, Karla Lauden, Michael Nitsch, Gail D. Panske, Sheila Pitt, Andrew Polk, Jean Ellen Price, Sean StarWars , Fred Stonehouse, Gary Weidner, Art Werger, and Connie Wolfe.

A Taste of Wisconsin, another portfolio in RAM’s growing works on paper holdings, will be shown alongside Prints Matter, Master Mimics.  A Taste of Wisconsin was created in 1985 by UW-Parkside’s summer printmaking class and contains works by eleven local printmakers. The prints themselves are a celebration of the Wisconsin experience as interpreted by each artist. A Taste of Wisconsin includes the following artists: Edie Blake, Dave Castaneda, Doug DeVinny, Chris Dorf, William Greider, Jennifer Gourdoux, Glen Larson, Susan M. Miller, Susan Schuder,  Karen Roszkowski, and Gary Weidner.
