SUMMARY:Art & Identity: Exploring the Shared Stories of Artists Nicole Acosta and René Amado
DESCRIPTION:Art & Identity: Exploring the Shared Stories of Artists Nicole Acosta and René Amado\nFrom left to right:\nRené Amado\, Photography: Courtesy of the Artist\nNicole Acosta\, Photography: Courtesy of the Artist\n\n\n\n\nIn 2024\, the United Way of Racine County awarded RAM its Equity Innovation Fund grant\, which provided the opportunity to showcase the talents of Nicole Acosta and René Amado. Both artists use their work to address cultural identity—often centering a multidisciplinary approach that highlights their perspectives as artists of color and offers a dynamic platform to examine and reframe personal\, social\, and cultural issues. \nJoin RAM and these two local artists as they explore Mexican culture and identity in art at an upcoming Community Briefing at The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread\, 33 East Four Mile Road in Racine\, on Wednesday\, March 26\, 2025\, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Art & Identity: Exploring the Shared Stories of Artists Nicole Acosta and René Amado will delve into key cultural elements\, history\, traditions\, and contemporary issues through a creative perspective. The artists will lead a discussion followed by time for the audience to ask questions and respond to the artists. After the discussion\, stick around for the opportunity to network and foster a stronger and more connected community. \n\n\n\n\nAcosta and Amado’s works were featured in three exhibitions at RAM and RAM’s  Wustum Museum: Nicole Acosta: HOOPS — Behind the Aesthetic Lies the Story\, Low: René Amado\, and RAM Showcase: Storytellers—Narrative Photography from Artists of Color. These exhibitions highlighted powerful narratives regarding the cultural significance of hoop earrings and lowrider vehicles—shedding light on the experiences of marginalized communities and challenging harmful stereotypes and racism. Additionally\, RAM used part of the Equity Innovation Fund grant to acquire a photograph from Acosta’s HOOPS Project for the museum’s permanent collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free\, but advance registration before March 19\, 2025 is required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER FOR FREE ON THE JOHNSON FOUNDATION’S WEBSITE

SUMMARY:Artist Talk at UW-Parkside with René Amado and Nicole Acosta
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talk at UW–Parkside with René Amado and Nicole Acosta\nFrom left to right:\nRené Amado\, Photography: Courtesy of the Artist\nNicole Acosta\, Photography: Courtesy of the Artist\nJoin artists René Amado and Nicole Acosta for a special Artist Talk at UW–Parkside at 10:00 am on Thursday\, November 7. This free event invites guests to learn more about these two artists and their careers\, as well as ask questions about their current featured exhibitions—Low: René Amado at RAM and Nicole Acosta: HOOPS—Beyond the Aesthetic Lies the Story at RAM’s Wustum Museum. \nThe event will take place at Bedford Hall— in the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities (CART)— and is presented as a special partnership with local artist Lisa Marie Barber who teaches a class at UW–Parkside related to the topics explored in these museum exhibitions. ART 124\, Lowriders\, Kicks\, and Graffiti focuses on the art and visual culture of Latin Americans\, Hispanic Americans\, and African Americans during the past 40 years. \nRené Amado\nBased in Racine\, WI\, René Amado began honing his craft around 2013\, in downtown San Antonio\, Texas. For Amado\, walking the streets and capturing the various scenes and unique individuals he would encounter was a great way to flex his creativity while unwinding from a stressful workday. Since then\, he has gone to work in many other genres of photography including: concert and live music\, photojournalism\, fashion\, wedding\, culinary\, automotive\, portraiture\, and documentary. In 2017\, he started René Amado Photography. In addition to working on freelance photography\, he also teaches photography to high school photography. Amado was the inaugural recipient of the RAM Artist Fellowship Emerging Artist award in 2020. \nNicole Acosta\nWhether through visual art\, written word\, or photography\, most of Nicole Acosta’s work reflects the exploration of identity\, experience\, place\, culture\, and storytelling. Born and raised in Milwaukee\, WI\, Acosta—a first-generation Mexican artist—is the creator of The HOOPS Project which is being nationally recognized. In 2023\, she held a solo exhibition for the project at MARN featuring 63 works\, and launched the world premiere of the HOOPS stage play—written by Eliana Pipes based off the stories told by those photographed for The HOOPS Project. \nThank you to the United Way of Racine County for awarding RAM an Equity Innovation Fund Grant to partly fund this event and other outreach programs relating to Low and Nicole Acosta: HOOPS.

SUMMARY:Book Signing with Rory Graves
DESCRIPTION:Book Signing with Rory Graves\nHaunted Racine by Rory Graves\nFriday\, October 6 \n4:00 – 7:00 pm \n\nJoin RAM for a spooktacular night as Rory Graves signs copies of their brand-new book\, Haunted Racine\, at RAM on Friday\, October 6 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. \n\nLike so many cities bordering Lake Michigan\, Racine has a long and storied history. Some of that history is stranger than fiction. The Live Towerview neighborhood\, brimming with stories of the city’s earliest burial sites\, is a hotbed of ghostly activity. Former asylums like the ambitious Taylor Home Orphan Asylum and the infamous Racine County Insane Asylum are filled with chilling tales of the unexplained. The local Masonic Temple houses the restless souls of some of the city’s earliest residents. So do Chances Food & Spirits and Ivanhoe\, two of the most haunted taverns in Southeastern Wisconsin. In Haunted Racine\, historian Rory Graves tells the stories of these\, and many other\, spooky locations. \nDon’t miss this frighteningly fun event as part of RAM’s celebration during Downtown Racine’s October First Friday event. Haunted Racine will be available to purchase in the RAM Museum Store.
