DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk: Celebrating Don Reitz with Collectors Leatrice and Melvin Eagle\nInstallation view from Collection Focus: Don Reitz\nPhotography: Jarvis Lawson\nFriday\, October 27\, 2023\n5:00 – 7:30 pm \nRAM invites you to a rare opportunity to learn about Don Reitz—a much-admired American ceramic artist who taught at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1962 until 1988. His career-spanning exhibition\, Collection Focus: Don Reitz\, debuts just over 55 pieces from 1961-2008. This archive is firmly anchored by a recent large gift of almost 50 examples from noted collectors Leatrice S. and Melvin B. Eagle. At 6:00 pm on Friday\, October 27\, RAM Executive Director and Curator of Collections Bruce W. Pepich will host a conversation with the Eagles about their collection process and long-term supportive relationship with Reitz. Galleries will be open for individual viewing prior to the talk\, at 5:00 pm. \nFollowing the talk\, around 6:45 pm\, enjoy a brief gallery tour through Wisconsin Artists: 1960-90\, a recently opened exhibition featuring a range of media by artists living and working in the state during the years Reitz was teaching in Wisconsin. These pieces from RAM’s collection document the rich and varied Wisconsin visual arts field that surrounded Reitz while he made many of the pieces in Collection Focus. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Some of that history is stranger than fiction. The Live Towerview neighborhood\, brimming with stories of the city’s earliest burial sites\, is a hotbed of ghostly activity. Former asylums like the ambitious Taylor Home Orphan Asylum and the infamous Racine County Insane Asylum are filled with chilling tales of the unexplained. The local Masonic Temple houses the restless souls of some of the city’s earliest residents. So do Chances Food & Spirits and Ivanhoe\, two of the most haunted taverns in Southeastern Wisconsin. In Haunted Racine\, historian Rory Graves tells the stories of these\, and many other\, spooky locations. \nDon’t miss this frighteningly fun event as part of RAM’s celebration during Downtown Racine’s October First Friday event. Haunted Racine will be available to purchase in the RAM Museum Store.

Milwaukee-based artist Mutòpe Johnson and artist/Mahogany Gallery owner Scott Terry will guide visitors throughout the RAM galleries while discussing a selection of pieces that resonate with them. \nThis free\, educational event invites visitors to ponder their perception and experience of the artwork while considering curatorial and historical aspects. \nAbout the Artists: \nMutòpe J. Johnson is a Milwaukee-based artist whose work has been included in exhibitions such as at the Overture Center Fine Arts Gallery\, Madison; the Charles Allis Fine Arts Museum\, Milwaukee; the Milwaukee Art Museum; and many others. \nScott Terry is the founder of Mahogany Gallery\, a contemporary fine art gallery located in Racine\, WI.
