Overview
2 Days: November 7 and 8
Instructor/Artist: Liandra Skenandore
Use a prepared kit of black ash splint material to create a small basket, measuring approximately 6 x 6 x 5 inches. Artist Liandra Skenandore, whose work was recently featured in an exhibition at RAM Wustum will teach the checkerwork weaving technique for the base and the continuous weave pattern for the walls. Then, finish the basket by tucking in the uprights and preparing rim and lashing pieces for fitting onto the basket body.
As part of the class, students will also learn about Oneida and Haudenosaunee black ash basketry traditions and history of the artform in Wisconsin and the wider Great Lakes region.
No prior basket weaving experience is required. Some hand strength and finger dexterity are necessary to work with scissors and a knife to prepare all the materials for the basket.
The basket kit fee of $75 is included in the registration fee, and all other tools and materials are provided by the instructor.
