Happy Clinique from the Sequences Series
Sylvie Fleury

In her early work, Candida Alvarez created representational paintings largely inspired by her Puerto Rican heritage and experiences in urban settings. Her later work became much more abstract and is credited as “advanc[ing] a non hierarchical relationship between abstraction and figuration, thoughtfully interweaving formal exploration, personal narrative, and conceptual strategies,” as seen in Breast, Navel, Eye.
