Drawing on the use of flowers as historical “symbols of the feminine,” Jessica Calderwood creates sculptures, jewelry, and wall reliefs that combine fantasy with an exploration of gender and identity. Recede, one of two Calderwood enamel brooches in RAM’s collection, is based on the form of an ancient fibula used to fasten garments. While Calderwood is primarily a metal and enamel artist, her practice also includes use of ceramics, glass, and fiber.
