Summer and Winter Shawl
Randall Darwall

With a background in chemistry, Karren Brito utilized a vast knowledge of dyeing techniques to create color saturated handmade silk clothing. Works like Opera Shawl reflect Brito’s interest in exploring the dynamic between color and texture. Sometimes she would compare the iridescent colors and pleating of pieces like this—created through fabric wrapping and specific dying processes—to mythical creatures like the feather-covered serpent god of the Aztecs, Quetzalcoatl.
